Food in Thailand

One of the first questions that interests guests of the coastal city of Pattaya is which establishments to eat at and how much it costs. This article is dedicated to food establishments with a variety of formats.

What, where and how much

You can have a snack or a hearty lunch in the city literally at every step. There are restaurants and cafes, shops where you can heat up and immediately eat purchased fast food, as well as public catering outlets in markets, streets and food courts in shopping centers. Offers vary in price and type of food. If desired, you can find dishes from any cuisine in the world.

Street food

This is the most common and most budget-friendly food format, which is popular primarily with local residents. Small establishments serving national cuisine are called makashnitsy and look like an ordinary motorcycle with an attached mobile kitchen on a cart.

The cost of such food will vary depending on the time of day and area, while for city guests the prices may be one and a half times higher than for Thais. However, in such establishments there is usually no menu with prices, so we advise you to keep in mind the following average prices:

Chicken, fish and pork balls – 10 baht;
Small sausages – 10 baht;
A serving of naked rice – 10 baht;
Fried egg – 10 baht;
Large sausages – 20 baht;
Thai pancakes “Roti” with banana or mango – 30 baht;
Fried corn – 30 baht;
Chicken or pork – 40 baht;
Rice with chicken + egg + vegetables – 30–50 baht;
Rice with shrimp + egg + vegetables – 30–50 baht;
Pad Thai noodles with chicken and egg – 30–50 baht;
Thai Pad Thai noodles with seafood, fried with spices – 30–50 baht;

Markets and food courts

Food outlets in markets and food courts in shopping centers are another way to eat inexpensively in the city, while the quality of the food remains high.

The prices here are not much different from dishes on the street, in makashnitsa and small cafes, but the choice is much greater.

Chicken and pork kebabs – 50 baht;
Fish – small (60–80 baht), medium (100 baht), large (120 baht);
Shrimp – small portion (100 baht), medium (150 baht), large (200 baht);
Squid – 50–70 baht;
Crabs – 300–400 baht per kg;
Lobster – 900–1500 baht per kg;
Lobsters – 1500–2000 baht per kg;
Ready-made dishes: rice or noodles with chicken, pork or seafood, fried with egg and vegetables – 100 baht.
The best places to eat are at Jomtien Night Market, Pattaya Park Night Plaza, and Naklua Fish Market. As for food courts, they are in all major shopping centers, including Central Festival, Royal Garden Plaza and Central Marina.

The most popular places where you can buy ready-made meals and, if desired, heat them up and eat them on the spot are the outlets of the Seven Eleven chain. They work even late in the evening, when restaurants are already closed.

Alcohol

The most reasonable prices for alcoholic drinks in the city should be found in grocery stores and supermarkets. To save money, choose larger packs, such as 6-pack beer. Usually, local drinks are cheaper. Here is the price order as of 2023:

Sales time

You can officially buy alcohol throughout Thailand only from 11 am to 2 pm and from 5 pm to midnight. However, this rule is strictly observed only during national and religious holidays, and even then only in large supermarkets. If you wish, you can find alcoholic drinks around the clock, for example, in 7-Eleven stores.

Fruits and Vegetables

Pattaya is a real paradise for lovers of fruits and vegetables. You will have a huge selection, including truly rare species, reasonable prices and high quality. However, it should be remembered that these products have their own seasonality, otherwise it will be difficult to find such fruit or the prices will be several times higher. Prices also depend on the location of the point of sale. The most affordable fruits and vegetables should be found in markets such as Wat Bun and Rompo. In addition, vegetables and fruits are sold in street stalls, regular supermarkets and shops, including those already washed and cut.

Cafes and restaurants

There are a huge number of restaurants and cafes in Pattaya. They differ in popularity, price level and type of cuisine. On average, lunch per person in a restaurant costs 500–1000 baht, and you can buy it in a cafe for 300–400 baht.

Buffet restaurants

The “buffet” format, or the more familiar name for many, “buffet”, is widespread in Pattaya. Such establishments operate in many hotels or exist as separate “unlimited” restaurants. Usually for a small amount of around 400 baht, you can choose any dish in any quantity, often without even a time limit.

Finally, some traditional restaurants are switching to buffet style on certain days.
